Seniors’ lunch

Local seniors enjoyed their lunch yesterday at the Sister Kennedy Centre. The weekly luncheon, which costs $5 per meal, is available to any seniors aged 55 and over who are interested in stopping by over the noon hour.
User fee hike likely
User fees for town services could go up in 2017.
Town council will receive a recommendation from the Administration and Finance executive committee for a 1.5 percent increase to all user fees during its regular meeting Monday night.
This increase is in line with the Ontario Consumer Price Index inflationary increase—a practice council has followed in recent years.
Muskie girls nab tie

Annalise (CC) Hayes netted her second goal of the game during a mad scramble in front with less than a second on the clock to salvage a 3-3 tie for the Muskie girls’ hockey team against the Shaftesbury Titans (Winnipeg).
Three injured in crash
Police are continuing their investigation into a two-vehicle collision that occurred Wednesday around 2:25 p.m. on Highway 17 west of Keewatin.
Three people were transported to the hospital with unknown injuries.
Two had to be extracted from two different vehicles using the “jaws of life.”
Tulips bulbs

Kirsty Sinclair helped Aymee Hunt plant tulip bulbs on the east side of the Fort Frances Public Library this morning as part of Ontario Public Library Week festivities. A small group of volunteers joined to plant the special bulbs that, in spring, will bloom red and white to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.
Fire scene stays quiet
The forest fire hazard remains “low” across the Northwest Region.
No new fires were reported between Monday and yesterday, and there are no active blazes anywhere in the region.
But hunters are asked to be aware that FireRangers still can be out fighting fires in bush where you’re hunting and driving down the same back roads.
Keep an eye out and think safety first.

Krista Gushulak, left, Terri Anne Lundgren, and June Haver kept the grill sizzling with a large quantity of meaty delights during “Credit Union Day” at the Nexus Community Credit Union here yesterday. The customer appreciation event saw people given a chance to sample hotdogs, chips, and pop, as well as enjoy a piece of cake.
Murder charge in death
On Oct. 19 around 7 a.m., an officer with Nishnawbe Aski Police Service responded to a report of a disturbance outside a residence on Six Nations Road on Kasabonika Lake First Nation.
A 54-year-old male of Kasabonika Lake First Nation, identified as Alec Tom McKay, was transported to medical treatment and subsequently pronounced dead by medical staff.
No Diggity widens lead
No Diggity said yes to the notion of keeping their spot on top.
The squad was one of two to garner the maximum six points last night in Fort Frances Women’s Volleyball League action, giving them a league-best 26 points this season.
No Diggity also widened its lead over second-place Kiss My Pass (24), which earned five points last night.
Zombie scene

Jillian Armstrong, left, Evan Caul, and Anika Beaudry rehearsed a scene from “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse” earlier this week in preparation for Fort High’s annual fall play, a comedy that will take to the Townshend Theatre stage Oct. 27-29 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which can be purchased in advance at Northwoods Gallery and Gifts, cost $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
