Man arrested for threats

District

Members of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) on Aug. 24 were called to investigate an accusation of threats involving the use of a firearm.

Members of the Rainy River District Crime unit as well as the Northwest Region (NWR) Emergency Response Team (ERT) conducted an investigation including the execution of a warrant in Morley Township.

Beware of fraud: police

Members of the Rainy District Ontario Provincial Police were made aware last week of a phone scam which has affected multiple persons in the area.

The scammers have phoned unsuspecting persons and claimed that they have won a sweepstakes or prize of some sort usually many millions of dollars, vehicles, or a combination of both.

Woman killed by bear

Shortly after 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, members of the Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were advised of a call for service at Red Pine Island on Rainy Lake.

Officers were advised that the complainant believed her daughter, aged 62, was attacked by a bear.

The female had gone to check on her dogs and had not returned.

The camp offered participants the chance to learn about different culinary practices and try their hands at a number of different recipes in the kitchens at the high school.

'Rewind' concert

Rick Socholotuk took up his bass guitar to perform with “Rewind” at the Rainy Lake Square on Thursday evening. The band drew a huge crowd to the square to enjoy a wide variety of crowd-pleasing tunes from the '50s, '60s and '70s. The show was a tribute to the late Marty Tibbs.

Popeye's runs out of chicken, man pulls gun

HOUSTON—Police say a man pulled a gun at a Popeyes restaurant in Houston after being told they were out of chicken sandwiches.

Houston police Lt. Larry Crowson says officers were called to the restaurant last night after a group of people tried to order a chicken sandwich.

Economy surprises with 3.7% growth

OTTAWA—The economy blew past projections by expanding at an annualized pace of 3.7 percent in the second quarter, giving Canada its strongest three-month stretch of growth in two years.

Statistics Canada's latest reading for real gross domestic product shows an unexpectedly solid turnaround for an economy that was coming off its weakest back-to-back quarters of growth since 2015.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Purdue University wants the public to know that it has no connection to a company blamed for helping drive the nation’s opioid crisis.

The university has spent years repeating that it has no affiliation to Purdue Pharma, the Stamford, Connecticut-based pharmaceutical company that’s the maker of the prescription painkiller OxyContin.

Indian landing module ready for touchdown on moon surface

NEW DELHI — The landing module of India’s unmanned moon mission separated from the orbiter on Monday ahead of its planned touchdown on the moon’s south polar region this weekend, the space agency said.

All the systems of the orbiter and the lander are “healthy,” the Indian Space Research Organization said in a statement.

European Space Agency blinks in game of cosmic chicken

BERLIN — The European Space Agency says it has performed an evasive manoeuvr with one of its satellites after rival SpaceX said it wouldn’t move its own spacecraft out of the way, risking a potentially catastrophic collision.

ESA said Tuesday that it “reached out early to SpaceX and was informed that no manoeuvr was planned for the Starlink satellite before the close approach.”

NASHVILLE—A Catholic school in Tennessee has removed the Harry Potter books from its library after the school's priest decided they could cause a reader to conjure evil spirits.

In an email obtained by The Tennessean , the Rev. Dan Reehil of Nashville's St. Edward Catholic School said he consulted exorcists in the U.S. and Rome who recommended removing the books.

2 WWII bombs discovered, defused in German cities

BERLIN — German authorities say two World War II-era bombs found in two major cities have been successfully defused and disposed of.

The dpa news agency reported Tuesday that 15,200 people were evacuated overnight in the northern city of Hannover as a precaution before experts defused the bomb in the morning.
