'The Mill' to be shown on CBC

With the local pulp and paper mill making headlines nearly every week, a new documentary may be of interest to district TV viewers.

The film, “The Mill,” will have its broadcast premier on CBC tonight at 9 p.m. CST.

New sex-ed curriculum raises concerns

Our advocacy has included speaking out about the Ford government's proposed changes to Ontario's 2015 Health and Physical Education Curriculum (HPEC), commonly known as “sex-ed.”

Despite a late rally, the third-seeded Her-icanes were able to hold off the top-ranked Renegades 2-1 last night to claim their fourth-straight Rainy River District Women's Fastball League crown at the St. Francis Sports Field.

Lakers set to open training camp next week

Another SIJHL season is right around the corner and the Fort Frances Lakers have their sights set squarely on an anticipated exciting season ahead.

The Lakers are set to open their annual training camp on Monday, which will run through next Thursday (Sept. 5).

Construction is well underway at the site of the new 19,000 sq. foot OPP detachment that's set to open in 2020. Work at the site began in the spring of this year following a $20 million investment from the province to build the new facility. The location of the new detachment is 901 Colonization Road West, right behind McDonald's.

One line at the two-line mill will operate on a reduced schedule starting on Sept. 5.

The Toronto-based company says U.S. homebuilding has been pulling back since the fall of last year and that has meant lower-than-anticipated OSB demand.

Bo Storey told WRDW-TV , “I just paddled and paddled . . .” to get away from a 10-foot, 360 pound (163.29 kilogram) alligator that got as close as 5 feet (1.52 metres) from the back of his kayak.
