Sudden deaths probed

On Saturday around 2:40 p.m., members of the Kenora OPP responded to a report of a sudden death at a residence on Hawk Lake Road in Kenora.

Officers attended and it was confirmed a 62-year-old female and a 57-year-old male, both from Kenora, were deceased.

'Dogs grab series lead

The Fort Frances Lakers quickly are learning why the Dryden GM Ice Dogs have been the cream of the crop in the SIJHL the past few seasons.

A pair of weekend wins, including a 7-2 romp Friday night and then a 5-2 win on Saturday, has the Ice Dogs up 2-0 in their best-of-seven semi-final playoff series heading into Game 3 tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. the Ice For Kids Arena.

Trish McQuaker of J.R Watkins sold various products during an “Easter Market” presented by the Rainy River District Farmers' Market on Saturday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Copper River Inn. It featured 36 vendors and was busy with shoppers for all six hours.

'Egg-stravaganza!'

Ted DeBenetti handed out candy outside of “A Buck or Two" during the Fort Frances Kiwanis Club's fifth-annual "Egg-stravaganza” event that took place Saturday from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the downtown core. Hundreds of children filled their Easter baskets with chocolates and candy from the 16 participating businesses along Scott Street.

Heather Wright drew the April “Trip of the Month” draw winner while her father-in-law and Kiwanian Robin Wright looked on this morning at International Travel Services here. Lawrence Armstrong of Pinewood will be heading to Berlin, Germany—a trip valued at $4,500. Next month's trip is to Reykjavik, Iceland ($4,000).

Hundreds search for missing boy

Hundreds of people spent their Easter long weekend searching for a missing boy from a small southern Ontario community who was swept away in the Grand River during a recent flood.

Searchers from several nearby communities have been congregating just outside Orangeville, Ont. every day for the last six weeks to walk alongside the river and search for the body of Kaden Young.

Parliament poet talks ego, emotion in writing

The Quebec poet will be spending a lot more time in this library over the next two years during her term as parliamentary poet laureate, adding to the writing surrounding her on this sunny March morning.

Stuck U.S. Navy ship finally heading home

MONTREAL—An American warship stuck in Montreal since Christmas Eve finally has resumed its trip to its home port in Florida, the U.S. Navy confirmed Saturday.

The USS Little Rock was commissioned in Buffalo, N.Y. on Dec. 16 but was trapped by ice at the Port of Montreal less than two weeks into its maiden voyage.

WINNIPEG—Canada's Indigenous Services minister says Ottawa has fully complied with the orders of a 2016 ruling from the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal which said the federal government discriminates against indigenous children.

“We have turned a corner,” Jane Philpott told The Canadian Press.

Data breach hits Saks Fifth Avenue, Lord & Taylor stores

A data breach at department store chains Saks Fifth Avenue, Saks Off Fifth and Lord & Taylor has compromised the personal information of customers who shopped at the stores.

The chains’ parent company, Canada-based Hudson’s Bay Co., announced the breach of its store payment systems on Sunday. The company said it was investigating and taking steps to contain the attack.

TORONTO—Justin Smoak felt like he let the team down in the first inning when he struck out with two men on and nobody out.

The Toronto slugger made up for it in a big way.

Smoak belted a two-run homer in the seventh inning, then launched a grand slam in the eighth to power the Blue Jays to a 7-4 win over the N.Y. Yankees yesterday afternoon.

Hall scored the winner in the third period—a short-handed breakaway—as New Jersey rallied to beat the Montreal Canadiens 2-1 yesteray to remain in the thick of the playoff race.

Poulter nabs berth in Masters

HUMBLE, Tex.—Ian Poulter made a 20-foot birdie putt on the final hole to force a playoff and won the Houston Open on the first extra hole with a par to earn the last spot in the Masters.

One week after Poulter mistakenly was told he had locked up a spot at Augusta National through the world ranking, he left no doubt by winning in clutch fashion over PGA Tour rookie Beau Hossler.

BEIJING — China’s defunct Tiangong 1 space station mostly burned up on re-entry into the atmosphere over the central South Pacific on Monday, Chinese space authorities said.

The experimental space laboratory re-entered around 8:15 a.m. Beijing time, the China Manned Space Engineering Office said.
