OPP doing seatbelt checks

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers working in North West Region will be partaking in the Easter long weekend seatbelt campaign which runs tomorrow through Monday.

The focus of the provincial traffic initiative is to make sure that all occupants of vehicles are wearing seatbelts.

Fort Frances native Brandon Bodnar's impressive season just got a whole lot better.

The SIJHL announced yesterday that the Thunder Bay North Stars' goalie has been named its top goaltender award recipient for the 2017-18 season.

On the year, the former Fort Frances Laker led all goalies in wins while going 23-7-2-1 overall with a 2.64 GAA and .918 save percentage.

50th anniversary

Mark and Jennifer Cawston wrote down their memories of Confederation College into the school's celebration book yesterday during the Fort Frances campus's 50th anniversary celebration reception. The campus was filled with staff, students, and past graduates who had a chance to reconnect and reminisce about their experiences at Confederation College.

Steve Windels of Team 40-plus looked to make a play as he was heavily guarded by Josh Pawluk of Team under-40 during the Fort Frances Men's Basketball League's “Mediocre Game" that was held at the Fort High Gym on Tuesday night as part of its all-star festivities. The "old guys” went on to take it by a score of 49-33.

Retired lawyer Peter Kirby gave a presentation on the Magna Carta at the Fort Frances Museum on Tuesday evening. He spoke to the history and significance of this historical document which is the first example of a king of England consenting to written limits on his power drafted by his subjects.

Trudeau boasts at swanky fundraiser

MONTREAL—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted his government's commitment to transparency and its tough stance on the wealthy at a high-priced fundraiser yesterday attended by some of Montreal's elite.

Before beginning his remarks to the roughly 150 Liberal party donors in attendance, Trudeau thanked Stephen Bronfman, a major party fundraiser and well-known businessman and financier.

OTTAWA—Last June, Science Minister Kirsty Duncan hung out the “we're hiring” sign and dangled grants of up to $1 million to try and lure some of the best and brightest international researchers to come to work in Canada.

Nine months later, 24 scientists have been given the nod, 10 of whom are Canadians coming home from all over the world.

Duncan calls it a “brain gain.”

Woman suing over porn shoot

AQUINNAH, Mass.—A Massachusetts woman has filed a federal lawsuit accusing her tenant of using her Martha's Vineyard home to shoot pornographic videos without telling her.

The lawsuit filed this week says Leah Bassett had no idea when she rented out her home in 2014 that it would be used to shoot adult films.
