Transportation policy revisions up for vote

The Northwest Catholic District School Board plans to vote on revisions to the Northwestern Ontario Student Services Consortium Transportation Policy at its regular meeting tonight.

The board also will discuss reports on the consolidation of St. Michael's and St. Francis schools here, student report cards and EQAO achievements, kindergarten registration, and its 2018-19 budget.

Town buying a new grader

Public Works will be getting a new grader.

Town council approved the capital budget item during a committee of the whole meeting yesterday after learning one of the town's two current graders is beyond repair.

Man busted for break-in

On Sunday just before 4 a.m., the Kenora OPP responded to a call of a male unlawfully entering a vehicle in the Valley Drive area of the city.

The complainant confronted the subject and kept him at the scene until police arrived shortly afterwards.

A 23-year-old Kenora male was arrested and charged with trespassing by night.

Stabbing probed by police

An altercation just outside of Fort Frances on Saturday evening led to a stabbing.

The victim suffered injuries but is in stable condition.

Other people involved in the altercation sustained injuries, as well, but none of them are deemed life-threatening.

Seagulls have returned to the Borderland area, including this one spotted on the docks at the Sorting Gap Marina yesterday afternoon. Local lore says three more “snows” will follow the gulls' return before spring arrives for good here.

The Bargain Shop has decorated its windows in support of the Muskie curlers competing in the OFSAA boys' and girls' championships set for this week at the Fort Frances Curling Club. The action runs tomorrow through Saturday.

'Balloonatic' plans to jump from space

CALGARY—An Alberta man who was nicknamed “balloonatic” for soaring over the Calgary Stampede grounds in a lawn chair held aloft with helium balloons says he's planning a legal flight that would break a skydiving record.

Dan Boria said he plans to apply for permits from Transport Canada to launch a high-altitude flight and is midway through getting a hot-air balloonist licence.

Divers search for boy

MONTREAL—The search for a missing Montreal boy moved into the frigid waters of a river yesterday as divers took turns plunging in the hope of finding clues in the disappearance of 10-year-old Ariel Jeffrey Kouakou.

It was the first day divers had entered the Riviere des Prairies since the boy left home March 12 and disappeared while walking to a friend's house.

WINNIPEG—A group that represents defence lawyers says some proposed laws aimed at cracking down on drivers distracted by hand-held electronic devices go too far.

Manitoba and Ontario are two provinces planning to let police temporarily suspend the licences of drivers caught using hand-held cellphones and other equipment.

OTTAWA—Gun-sellers would be required to keep records of firearms inventory and sales for at least 20 years under government legislation introduced today.

The proposed measure—part of a wide-ranging firearms bill tabled in the House of Commons—is intended to assist police in investigating gun trafficking and other crimes.

MONTREAL—The Florida Panthers are inching closer to a playoff spot.

Roberto Luongo's 28-save shutout lifted the Panthers to a 2-0 victory over the injury-riddled Montreal Canadiens last night.

It left them three points back of New Jersey for the eighth and last Eastern Conference playoff spot, with two games in hand on the Devils.

Happ to open for Jays

DUNEDIN, Fla.—J.A. Happ will be the Toronto Blue Jays' opening-day starter this season.

The veteran left-hander will pitch against the N.Y. Yankees next Thursday at Rogers Centre.

He will face a Yankees' lineup that could see Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gary Sanchez hit 2-3-4.

It will be the first time in his 10-year career that Happ will start opening day.
