Town working to repair potholes

Maybe the potholes are worse this year or maybe it just seems that way.

Whatever the case, Public Works is doing its best to fix the ugliest side of the spring thaw.

Crews have been deployed to trouble areas, thawing storm sewer basins and filling potholes. But those are tasks easier said than done.

Muskie boys stave off elimination

The Muskie boys' hockey team has lived to fight another day.

Facing a must-win situation, the black-and-gold bounced back with a 6-0 shutout of the host Sioux Lookout Warriors last night to even their best-of-three NorWOSSA final at a game apiece.

Lakers fall to Miners

A three-goal outburst in the first period ultimately was the Fort Frances Lakers' undoing in a 5-2 loss to the English River Miners on Saturday night at the Ice For Kids Arena.

It was all Miners in the opening 20 minutes as the visitors got tallies from Ethan Wong, Nic Herringer, and Terix Fischer-Kobes' (power play) to set the tone early.

Two teams top action

How I Set Your Mother and Take A Hit both garnered the maximum six points in Fort Frances Women's Volleyball League action Thursday night.

The Volley Llamas and Kiss My Pass each snared four points.

Gillons', Scared Hitless, Duck and Dive, Let's Talk About Sets, and No Diggity all grabbed three.

Bump It Up earned one.

Cooking bannock on a stick was a popular activity during “SnOasis 6: Your Winter Fix” on Saturday afternoon at the Rainy Lake Square. The free family event, which drew well over 200 people, was put on by the Friends of the Fort Frances Museum, with help from Friends of the Fort Library and other community volunteers.

A Public Works crew marked this rather large pothole with pylons this morning on the 500 block of Second Street East. Crews have been working to thaw catch basins and drain water off the road so they can patch the potholes.

Wenjack's sister opens indigenous school at Trent

PETERBOROUGH, Ont.—Chanie Wenjack's sister said the presence of Gord Downie was upon Peterborough on Friday as she marked the opening of a school for indigenous studies at Trent University named after her brother.

“Even though Chanie is not here, our brothers Mike and Patrick are here,” Pearl Achneepineskum said as she drew attention to Downie's siblings across the room.

Tories extend deadline to sign up to vote

TORONTO—Ontario's Progressive Conservative party, fending off criticisms about the system put in place to help select its new leader, has given members more time both to register for the right to vote and actually cast their ballots.

A senior party source confirmed Saturday the organization has extended the voting deadline, pushing it back from March 8 to noon on March 9.

Laine sparks Jets to road win

Laine scored twice for the second-straight game, and extended his points streak to eight, in the Jets' 3-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes last night.

Laine had his third multi-goal game in the last four and has seven multi-point nights during his streak.

Pope declares new feast day devoted to the Virgin Mary

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis has made the devotion to the Virgin Mary a new fixed celebration in the Roman Catholic calendar.

The Vatican published a decree Saturday in which Francis declared that the Mary “Mother of the Church” feast would be celebrated on the Monday following Pentecost. This year, it falls on May 21.

Praline is standout in recipe for arugula salad

A hard candy typically consisting of sugar and nuts, praline was invented in the 17th century by the French (which is why it’s pronounced “prah leen,” not “pray line”).
