Square tender to be awarded

Town council is expected to award the tender to build the Rainy Lake Square project at its regular meeting tonight.

Council will vote to authorize the execution of an agreement with RML Contracting of Thunder Bay for the construction of the square, as well as the replacement of the brick sidewalk along the 200 block of Scott Street and the block entry sidewalks at the Civic Centre.

Prepare a 72-hour kit: fire chief

Today is the start of “Emergency Preparedness Week” (May 8-13) and Fort Frances Fire Chief/CEMC Tyler Moffitt is urging citizens to take steps to be prepared.

Chief Moffitt said a major factor in being ready for an emergency is having a 72-hour kit that includes things like water, food, flashlights, batteries, a first-aid kit, spare keys, cash, and a plan.

The OPP has been requested to assist the Nishnawbe-Aski Nation Police Service in relation to an occurrence on the Sandy Lake First Nation.

At around 1:45 a.m. on Saturday, the Nishnawbe-Aski Police Service responded to a call regarding a male in need of assistance outside a residence on River Road.

Police responded and located a male in the ditch.

Three stunt drivers charged

Three people are facing stunt driving charges after being stopped by the OPP near Marathon on Saturday.

Around 12:30 a.m., the OPP observed a GMC truck speeding on Highway 17 in Lecour Township.

An officer operating radar determined the truck was travelling 145 km/h in the 90 km/h zone.

A 31-year-old male from Stoney Creek, Ont. was charged.

Lakers' duo commits

Two now former Fort Frances Lakers will have new hockey homes this fall.

The team announced Saturday that Jared Virtanen, last season's leading scorer, has committed to play for the ACHA Division I Calvin College Knights based out of Grand Rapids, Mich.

Cooper Witherspoon finally got on the scoresheet while his team finally got in the win column.

The Fort Frances resident's first goal of the week was one of three insurance markers for Team Hockey Northwestern Ontario in a 4-0 victory yesterday over Team Northern Ontario Hockey Association in the seventh-place game at the 2017 OHL Gold Cup in Kitchener.

Ont. squad nabs silver

Ontario had Manitoba on the run but the “Bison Province” showed its horns when it need to.

Team Ontario, featuring local defenceman Izzy Smith (Couchiching), were on a third-period roll with three-straight goals to take a 5-4 lead in Saturday's gold-medal final of the boys' division at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Cowichan, B.C.

Voodoos suffer semi-final loss

Brett Hahkala got one more shot at playing but the Powassan Voodoos needed one more shot from any of its players to go in the net.

Instead, the NOJHL champion Voodoos fell 2-1 to the OJHL kingpins, the Georgetown Raiders, in the semi-final of the 2017 Dudley Hewitt Cup Central Canadian Junior 'A' hockey championship in Trenton on Friday.

Danielle Bruyere grilled some hotdogs as Arlene Tucker assisted her in wrapping them up during Weechi-it-te-win Family Service's barbecue in support of children's mental health and well-being held Friday in conjunction with Mental Health Week. The event was hoping to attract a few hundred people similar to last year.

Pam Williams of 4 Your Pets and Jennifer Horton of Curvy Chick donned fancy, homemade hats for the annual spring ladies' luncheon hosted by the Riverside Foundation for Health Care on Sunday at the Robert Moore School gym. Throughout the lunch, a panel of judges evaluated everyone's hats, with Horton taking home the prize for prettiest one.

Man, toddler missing as car is swept away

MONTREAL—A man and a two-year-old child are missing in eastern Quebec after their vehicle drifted into a river because of heavy flooding on a road, police said today.

The child's mother was able to swim to shore after the car swerved into Riviere Sainte-Anne yesterday.

Her life was not considered to be in danger.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.—Even though he didn't get the win, Joe Biagini set one up for the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday.

Biagini and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, and Darwin Barney hit a tie-breaking homer in the eighth inning, as Toronto edged the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1.

The Jays took two-of-three from the Rays to win a road series for the first time this season (1-4-1).

Once they moved aside, he fired his towel into the no-longer-hidden hamper.

“Good shot,” said a reporter.

“Too late,” said Valanciunas.
