With the unseasonably warm weather prominent across the district, crews at New Gold’s Rainy River Project were busy Monday afternoon moving rock and clay to other parts of the site to prepare the open pit for the start of production in mid-2017.

Telemedicine studio at hospital relocated

The telemedicine studio at La Verendrye Hospital here has moved from the second floor to the ground floor in order to better serve patients.

It is located in the Outpatient Services area, with a new tabletop telemedicine unit also set up in the office of telemedicine co-ordinator Bev Thomson.

“It was an initiative that’s been in the works for some time,” noted Thomson.

Sarah Marusyk, acting president of the “Friends of the Museum,” displayed one of the auction items during the Fort Frances Museum’s “Night at the Museum” fundraiser held there Thursday night. Led by auctioneer Telford Advent, and with items donated by local artists and businesses, the live auction brought in $1,500 to go toward additional programming there.

Conversations, coffee, and cake were part of the Sunday afternoon “Poppy Day Tea” held at the Rainy River Legion Br. #54. A beautiful day brought a good crowd out to participate in this annual pre-Remembrance Day fundraiser.

More mine workers being hired

New Gold’s Rainy River Project, located north of Barwick, remains on schedule for its mid-2017 start-up.

“We’re still on target,” general manager Grant Goddard noted Monday, adding employment at the site continues to increase weekly.

As of this week, there were 313 full-time New Gold employees.

Muskie Caleb Allan had a spring in his step as he tried to shut down the attack of Evan Waller during the Dryden Eagles’ 3-2 win in Fort High’s NorWOSSA regular-season finale here last Tuesday afternoon. The NorWOSSA finals took place yesterday in Dryden (results not available as of press time).

New K-9 team on the job here

There’s a new dog—and officer—in town.

OPP Cst. Adam Martin and his canine partner, “Mako,” arrived in Fort Frances two weeks ago—taking over the post left vacant in the K-9 unit here when Cst. Chris Halvorsen, along with “Briggs” and “Diesel,” relocated back in May.

Museum gala a ‘lovely’ affair

The turnout might not have been huge but attendees seemed to enjoy themselves at the Fort Frances Museum’s “Night at the Museum” wine-and-cheese fundraising gala there Thursday evening.

“It was lovely as always,” said Sarah Marusyk, acting president of the “Friends of the Museum,” which hosted the fifth-annual event.

District communities to see jump in provincial funding

Ten communities in Rainy River District will receive more than $3.2 million in predictable, formula-based funding over the next three years to invest in critical local infrastructure projects.

Lower speed limit sought near school

The Rainy River District School Board is concerned about the speed limit in front of Crossroads School in Devlin and is asking the Ministry of Transportation to reduce it from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.

Director of Education Heather Campbell noted in a recent letter to Transportation minister Steven Del Duca that a speed of 80 km/h in front of the school is excessive and dangerous.

Muskie boys return home empty-handed

“Silver Linings Playbook” not only is an Oscar-nominated movie but an accurate depiction of Jordan Sinclair’s end-of-the-weekend review.

His Muskie boys’ hockey team was on the wrong end of a three-game sweep at the hands of the Thunder Bay Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Kings—losing 4-3 on Friday, followed by a 5-2 setback Saturday and then a 4-0 shutout Sunday.

Curler ready to ‘mix’ it up at nationals

It’s been a while since Jackie McCormick had a shot at a Canadian title.

But she has given a long look to the ceiling of her hometown Stratton Curling Club and has envisioned a shiny new decoration to join the two already hanging from it.

“The last national final I was in before now was in university . . . it’s nice to get that chance back again,” she noted.
