Trick-or-treaters
Nicholas Cain, left, along with his cousins, Luc and Sophie Thomson, and sister, Isabella, stopped by the third-annual “Trunk or Treat” event Monday at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre. Despite the drizzly weather, organizers of the Hallowe’en event deemed it a success, with an estimated 800 youngsters visiting the 14 decorated vehicles in the library’s parking lot.
Chargers promote safety messages
“If you’re texting, who’s driving?” “Arrive alive, drive sober.” “All aboard for safety.”
“Stop the stigma. Talk about it. Start a dialog. Break the silence.”
These are all safety messages Safe Communities Rainy River District is promoting at its new phone-charging stations that have been placed at the arenas in Fort Frances, Emo, and Atikokan (and soon in Rainy River).
Striking workers

Members of Laborers’ International Union of North America (LiUNA) Local 607 set up a picket line at Innovative Civil Constructors Inc.’s construction site office off the Noden Causeway yesterday morning. In an effort to have their voices heard over a labour issue, the strike didn’t impact traffic on the Causeway. Project managers were set to visit the site this morning.
Shower room upgrade lauded
As the Riverside Foundation for Health Care gears up for its annual Christmas donation campaign, board members got a good look Monday at the newly-renovated shower room in the Special Care Unit at Rainycrest Long-term Care here that resulted from last year’s generous showing by district residents.
Hunters' dinner

Aurora Cupp, the proud owner of a new rifle, couldn’t stop grinning as Emo and District Lions Club president Jodi Pellerin presented her with the prize. The gun raffle was just one of the popular activities at the club’s third-annual “Hunters’ Night” on Saturday in Barwick.
Sidewalk cafes being eyed here
Some downtown restaurants may start providing outdoor seating during the summer months.
The idea is to develop street cafes in conjunction with the new Rainy Lake Market Square.
Existing Scott Street restaurants would have seating on the sidewalk outside their businesses so patrons could enjoy food and beverages in the open air.
Poked home

Muskie Kelsey Langtry was a step quicker than Portage Collegiate Institute Saints’ goalie Haley Swidnicki and defender Kiera Shwaluk to tap this puck in and give Fort High a 5-2 lead in the second period of Saturday night’s game at the ’52 Canadians Arena that the hosts won 6-3.
Senior-friendly housing push revived
There’s no government funding available for new senior-friendly housing to be built in Fort Frances.
If people want it, they’ll have to invest in it themselves.
That’s the message from a local group of individuals who are gauging residents’ desire for—and willingness to pay for—apartments or condos to be built on property east of Flinders Place here.
DYS eyed to get bulk of funding to improve schools
In receiving additional funding through the Ministry of Education’s School Condition Improvement (SCI) program, the finance committee of the Rainy River District School Board shared its recommendations for the money with trustees at last night’s regular monthly meeting.
Food co-op gauging interest locally
With the Cloverbelt Local Food Co-op expected to expand into Rainy River District next year, co-ordinators are pushing to get area residents on board.
“It would be great if we could start to get people purchasing memberships because it would really help to gauge the interest,” said Andrea Habinski, agricultural co-ordinator for the co-op.
Family legacy comes to end
For 66 years, the Devlin post office has been manned by a member of Trudy Badiuk’s family.
But on Friday, after 32 years, Badiuk is retiring from her position as postmistress and the family tradition will come to an end.
“I said it wouldn’t bother me to quit but it will,” she said through tears there last week.
“I know I’m going to miss it.”
Local nabs Lund series title
No matter who his partner was, Brandon Kamm was landing all the big fish this year.
He ended up landing a big cheque, too—by about the length of a minnow.
The Dryden native, who now calls Fort Frances home, was honoured last Thursday with $10,000 after being named angler-of-the-year in the Lund Tournament Trail series for Northwestern Ontario and Manitoba.
Muskie girls unbeaten at ‘Showcase’
By the looks of things, the rest of NorWOSSA had better fear the Muskie girls’ hockey team like Michael Myers in a bad mood on Hallowe’en night in Haddonfield, Ill.
Taylor Croswell scored twice as Fort High skated to a convincing 4-1 win over the Dryden Eagles on Sunday afternoon to finish the second-annual Scott Clendenning Memorial Showcase undefeated with three wins and a tie.
Misfortune still plaguing Lakers
The Fort Frances Lakers had plenty of great skill and good luck to carry them to the past three SIJHL titles.
While the skill still is present at times this season, the luck apparently went on an extended vacation.
A bizarre week for the Lakers was capped Saturday night with a 4-2 loss to the Dryden GM Ice Dogs at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Muskie boys’ team opts to forge ahead
Discussing the players a team still has while shrugging off the ones no longer around is familiar coachspeak.
Jordan Sinclair preferred to walk up to the elephant in the room and punch it right in the tusk.
1 more: Cubs beat Indians, force Series to deciding Game 7
CLEVELAND — One more game. For everything.
Either a 108-year World Series championship drought will come to an end, or another that’s lasted 68 years.

Cubs vs. Indians in a winner-take-all Game 7.
As it should be.
“It’s just correct and apt that we’d go seven games,” Chicago manager Joe Maddon said.

Pumpkin Cream Cheese Brownies
I decided to take my favourite brownie recipe, the one I published in “The Mom 100 Cookbook” a handful of years ago, and turn it into something that says, “Hi, pumpkin season, how’ve you been?”
