MarleyRae Huntley, foreground, and Jody Szpara performed a tap dance to “Thank You for Being a Friend,” the memorable theme to classic ’80s TV show, “The Golden Girls,” at the Townshend Theatre on Tuesday evening. The performance was just one number in Chantelle Spuzak’s Dancemakers School of Dance’s 17th-annual recital, this year entitled “What’s on the Telly?”

Seed library set to launch

In the spirit of “Earth Day” tomorrow, the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre will launch its seed library, with a sunflower start kit giveaway to follow on Saturday.

This marks the second year for the seed library, which is a free community resource open to library members and non-members alike.

Students holding fundraiser for classmate

Students in Lynne Avis’ Grade 7 class at Robert Moore School are hosting a movie night fundraiser tomorrow for a classmate and his family.

Thomas Chapais was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in 2014.

After having his leg amputated, he had returned to school and was adjusting well to school life.

Tentative deal inked

The Rainy River District School Board on Monday reached a tentative agreement at the local level with Rainy River District Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO)–Educational Support Personnel (ESP).

The new agreement will be in effect from Sept. 1, 2014-Aug. 31, 2017, aligning with the provincial settlements at the central bargaining table.

Dustin Deugau was redirected towards his own net in unkind fashion by Tanner Watt of the Dryden GM Ice Dogs during Game 4 of the SIJHL final last night in Dryden. But Deugau and the Lakers had the last laugh by earning a 2-0 win to tie the best-of-seven series at 2-2.

The Rainy River District Festival of the Performing Arts continues with its Piano division, adjudicated by Jane Petroni, who teaches piano privately in Winnipeg and through the Preparatory Department of the University of Manitoba.

In this final week of the Festival, the Piano division is slated to wrap up tomorrow while the Instrumental division also is running today and tomorrow.

MNO election set for May 2

Sunset Country Métis Council members will be among those voting for a new Métis Nation of Ontario executive on May 2.

Voting will take place from 9 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Sunset Country Métis office (426 Victoria Ave.)

An advance poll will be held there this Saturday (April 23) from 3-7 p.m.

Man’s body recovered

Shortly after 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Kenora OPP officers responded to a report of a deceased male being located along the shoreline of Powder Island on Lake of the Woods.

Members of the Kenora OPP’s Marine and Trails Unit, and the Kenora Forensic Identification Unit, attended the scene yesterday and recovered the body.

Library Penny Shumaker got the seed library all ready to go for its “Earth Day” launch tomorrow. This will be the second year for the free community resource to be offered at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre.

Bujold off to OFSAA

Look out, OFSAA—the “Bujold Bomber” is headed back your way.

Aaron Bujold was the lone representative of the Muskie badminton team at the NWOSSAA championships yesterday in Dryden.

But the 10th-grader shrugged off any feelings of loneliness and got down to business in winning his second-straight silver medal in the senior boys’ singles division.

Rockettes, Rage to meet in final

Both the league-leading Wright Physiotherapy Rockettes and second-place La Place Rendez-Vous Rage were handed forfeit victories last night to advance to the final of the Borderland Women’s Indoor Soccer League.

Lakers knot series again

The Fort Frances Lakers’ goalie turned away all 35 shots he faced last night, and A.J. Rupert and Dylan Robertson each scored, in a 2-0 win over the host Dryden GM Ice Dogs in Game 4 of the SIJHL final.

The best-of-seven showdown is tied 2-2 heading into Game 5 here tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. at the Ice For Kids Arena.

TORONTO—A Toronto father who built his sons a $30,000 boat-shaped treehouse vowed yesterday to defend what he considers a family haven from city officials who want it torn down.

John Alpeza spent years working on the naval-themed treehouse for his boys, Kristian and Matheas, now 10 and eight.
