‘Your Ward News’ hate appeal underway; editor argues lawyer refused to call witnesses
TORONTO–The appeal in the case of two Toronto men convicted of promoting hatred against women and Jews is underway.
Among other things, James Sears, editor of Your Ward News, is arguing his trial lawyer did not represent him properly.
He says the lawyer refused to call any witnesses despite being urged to do so.
Toronto van attack trial begins today
TORONTO - The trial for the man who killed 10 people and hurt 16 others after driving a van down a Toronto sidewalk is set to get underway today.
Alek Minassian, 28, of Richmond Hill, Ont., faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and 16 counts of attempted murder.
He has admitted in court to planning and carrying out the attack on April 23, 2018.
Group cites 'unconscionable delay' by RCMP in court bid for watchdog report
OTTAWA - A civil liberties group is heading to court to force the release of a long-delayed watchdog report on its complaint about alleged RCMP surveillance of anti-oil protesters.
The British Columbia Civil Liberties Association says the Mounties have been sitting on the report for more than three years and the group is now asking the Federal Court to order its disclosure.

MONTREAL - Quebec is reporting a seventh straight day of more than a thousand new COVID-19 cases, with 1,162 infections and 38 new deaths linked to the novel coronavirus.
The Health Department says nine deaths were recorded in the previous 24 hours while another 27 occurred during the past week. One death was before Nov. 3 and another was on an undetermined date.

Hamilton-area long-term care home closes two units due to COVID-19 outbreak
DUNDAS, Ont. - Hamilton’s public health unit is reporting seven more COVID-19 cases at a long-term care home that’s dealing with an outbreak of the virus.
The health unit says 11 residents and eight staff members at the home outside the city have now tested positive for the virus.
