Three new COVID-19 cases in the northwestern region
The Northwestern Health Unit reports three new symptomatic COVID-19 cases in the past week - two in Sioux Lookout and one in the Dryden Red Lake area.
Dr. Kit Young-Hoon, medical officer of health at the Northwestern Health Unit, said these cases include cases on First Nation communities, as well as cases in schools. One of the three cases is travel-related.

First poker run a successful
The first annual Redrum Motorcycle Club Treaty #3 Poker Run was a success, according to organizers.
“All the support was awesome and it was great to see,” said James Eastman. The new charter's first run attracted several dozen motorcycle enthusiasts and Redrum MC members from across he region, to raise money for charity and share their passion for motorcycles.

Fire season still blazing, burning rules continue
Across the northwestern region, there is only one active blaze, but the risk of forest fire isn't extinguished yet.
Chris Marchand, information officer in the northwestern region for the Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services, said the forest fire hazard is still quite high in the Fort Frances area, along the Minnesota border as well as in Kenora.
Post-secondary students resume online classes
With most universities delivering their courses through online means in the first semester, post-secondary students are making decisions as to whether they will go back to living on campus, rent a house with their friends or stay at home until they go back to in-person classes.
Powlowski announces support for seniors impacted by COVID-19
Thunder Bay-Rainy River Liberal MP Marcus Powlowski, on behalf of Deb Schulte, Minister of Seniors, announced an investment of $81,230 in Thunder Bay-Rainy River last week. These funds will be dedicated to support projects organized and delivered by community groups to help seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Emo Legion rolls out the carpet for carpet bowling
The Royal Canadian Legion in Emo opened for carpet bowling season, the first week of September. After the seniors finish playing, they all gather – while physically distanced – for a luncheon meal.
With COVID-19, all seniors play with their masks on and use different sanitized woods to push the balls along the carpet.
Fall Bass Classic gets green light
The LaBelle's Rainy Lake Fall Bass Classic is set to launch this Saturday, Sept 26.
Although spectators will not be allowed, and the steak dinner has been cancelled, 33 teams have already signed up for the annual one-day tournament, which begins at LaBelle's Point Lodge, and allows anglers to fish anywhere north of the Causeway.

And they’re off! The first riders hit the road, above, in the first annual Redrum Motorcycle Club charity poker run. Bikers and volunteers gathered on Saturday at the Rainy River First nations Clubhouse, to raise funds for charity and enjoy a beautiful fall ride. The weather co-operated, and participants were all smiles.
