Ontario reports 514 new COVID-19 cases, 38 more deaths
TORONTO—Ontario is reporting 514 new COVID-19 cases today, and 38 more deaths.
That brings the province to a total of 8,961 cases, including 423 deaths and nearly 4,200 cases that have been resolved.
The growth in total cases has been relatively low for about a week, and Ontario health officials have said the peak is expected this week.
Trump hosts call with Trudeau and G7 leaders
OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his fellow G7 leaders are being hosted today by an impatient American president far more anxious than they appear to be to ease restrictions meant to control the spread of COVID-19.
President Donald Trump is leading a teleconference today with his counterparts because the U.S. holds the rotating chair of the G7 this year.

Ford opens door to systemic long-term care home changes
TORONTO — Premier Doug Ford is opening the door to systemic changes to the long-term care system in Ontario, as more than 140 residents have died in COVID-19 outbreaks.
Ford says it will be necessary to take a closer look at cracks in the system and this crisis will give the province an opportunity to create higher standards.
Manfred 'to turn over every stone' for MLB season
NEW YORK—Rob Manfred wants Major League Baseball to be in position to take the field whenever government and health officials give the go-ahead.
“I think it's incumbent upon us to turn over every stone to try to play the game in 2020 if there's any way we can in the environment,” the baseball commissioner said yesterday during an interview with The Associated Press.
NFL player tests positive
Los Angeles Rams centre Brian Allen says he tested positive for COVID-19 three weeks ago.
Allen is the first active NFL player to acknowledge testing positive during the coronavirus pandemic.
The third-year pro is not hospitalized and is “feeling good,” according to a statement issued by the Rams last night only after Allen spoke to Fox Sports about his positive test.
Former Jays infielder Damaso Garcia has died
TORONTO—Former Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Damaso Garcia, a two-time all-star and a big part of the club's rise to prominence in the 1980s, has died at the age of 63.
Garcia, who had a malignant brain tumour removed 29 years ago, died today in his native Dominican Republic, according to ESPN.
