User fees could see inflationary increase

Town residents could see a small inflationary increase to user fees next year.

Council will vote this evening on a recommendation to increase 2019 user fees by 1.7 percent, which is reflective of inflation as per the Ontario Consumer Price Index.

Council will also vote to approve the 2020 budget timetable to begin early preparation and planning of next year's budget.

Football Muskies fall to Maples

A bye to the Winnipeg High School Football League playoff semifinals just wasn't to be for the Muskie football team.

The Maples Marauders scored four touchdowns en route to a 29-6 win over the black-and-gold last Wednesday afternoon in Winnipeg.

Lakers split games on road

The Fort Frances Lakers showed off some of their patented early-season resilience by splitting a pair of games over the weekend.

After rallying for a 4-3 shootout win over the host Red Lake Miners on Friday night, the Lakers followed that up with a hard-fought 3-2 road loss to the Dryden GM Ice Dogs last night.

Men's hoops league kicks off new season

It was a great start to the 2019/2020 Fort Frances Men's League Basketball Season on Thursday at Fort High, with lots of returning players and a number of new faces.

The early game featured the Muskies squaring off against the RBC Lions, which turned out to be a tight opening game.

Workers with Daryl's Custom Landscapes took advantage of a sunny—if cool—day on Friday to trim back some trees in town, like this one on the edge of the parking lot at Fort Frances General Supply. Anyone looking to do some yardwork of their own might find this week a no-go as the forecast calls for snow flurries for what remains of October.

Members of the Rainy Lake Community Orchestra played for the crowd during the Riverside Foundation for Health Care's “Black & White” gala Saturday evening at the Copper River Inn. The sold-out fundraiser featured a number of activities to raise money in exchange for some enviable prizes, including a penny table, silent and live auctions, and games.

TORONTO—Ontario has reached a tentative agreement with the province's pharmacists that will see them take millions of dollars less in payments over the next half decade.

The deal, outlined in a Ministry of Health letter obtained by The Canadian Press, shows the province will save $436 million under the new reimbursement model.

Former MPP joins Liberal leadership race

Potts joins a race featuring multiple other former MPPs who lost their seats when the party was decimated in last year's loss to Premier Doug Ford's Conservatives.

Campus papers lose money due to tuition changes

TORONTO—Recent government-mandated changes to tuition fees in Ontario have resulted in some campus newspapers losing a significant portion of their funding.

The “Student Choice Initiative"—announced by the Progressive Conservative government in January—allows post-secondary students to opt out of services deemed "non-essential,” including campus newspapers and unions.
