Registration open for 'Trunk-or-Treat'

It's getting to be that spooky time of year, and with it an annual tradition returns to Fort Frances.

Organizers are now accepting registration for the sixth-annual“Trunk-or-Treat” to be held on Halloween night in the Fort Frances Public Library parking lot.

Library staffer Samantha Manty explained that the main goal of the event is safety.

Riverside Health Care, in conjunction with the Northwestern Health Unit, has declared the respiratory and gastroenteritis outbreaks over at Rainycrest Long Term Care Home, effective yesterday.

All social events and activities at Rainycrest have resumed. All visitors are now welcome.

It was a banner day for the Muskie junior girls' and boys' cross-country runners.

Both squads shone brightly for the Muskies with some great performances at the annual Hial Pike meet in International Falls.

The Muskies swept the top four spots in the junior varsity girls' 3200-metre run.

Lakers thumped by Norskies

The Thief River Falls Norskies rode the strength of three power-play goals to a 6-2 romp over the Fort Frances Lakers on Tuesday night in SIJHL action at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Lakers (4-3).

Muskies lose three to Eagles

It was a tough day for the Muskie court sport teams on Tuesday.

Three of the four squads suffered losses against the visiting Dryden Eagles in NorWOSSA action at Fort High.

The senior girls' basketball team was the lone Muskie squad to come out victorious, scrapping out a 45-36 decision to improve their league record to 5-1.

Emily Fitzgerald was just a little bit quicker to a loose ball than her Muskie teammate Heaven States during the second half of the junior girls' basketball team's 26-18 loss to the Dryden Eagles on Tuesday afternoon at Fort High. It was the first loss of the NorWOSSA season for the Muskies, who saw their league record fall to 5-1.

Keira Strom, left, Kristal Mayfield, Stacy Strom and Ollie the dog were decked out in their glowing apparel last night at the Sorting Gap Marina in advance of CMHA's sixth-annual “Steps Against Stigma” glow run. The run drew a huge collection of enthusiastic runners and mental health supporters to fight the stigma around mental health illnesses.

On a moonlit night—and using the lights from trucks, cell phones and back hoes—the crews from NST contracting from Thunder Bay, George Armstrong Co. Ltd. in Fort Frances and the general contractor, Bay City Construction, finished the single pour for the curbs and installation of the catch basins on the north side of the 300 block of Second Street East on Tuesday night.

Arianna Hyatt was in full stride as she cruised her way around the course at the annual Hial Pike race held in International Falls on Tuesday. Hyatt wound up in 23rd spot in the 33-runner field in the junior varsity girls' 3200-metre race with a time of 18:50.80.

VANCOUVER—Coach Travis Green says his Vancouver Canucks were in need of a victory as they headed into their home opener.

The squad had dropped their first two games of the season and with so many new faces in the room, a positive result could have a big impact, he said.

The Canucks (1-2-0) answered the call with a decisive 8-2 win over the L.A. Kings last night.
