Caliper Lake blaze among five new fires

From the MNRF

Five new fires were reported in the Northwest Region by yesterday afternoon.

Fort Frances Fire #22, located near Caliper Lake, was listed as “not under control” at 0.5 hectares in size at last report.

Dryden Fire #24, located near Basket Lake, also was listed as “not under control” at 0.5 hectares.

The other three new fires were located in Red Lake District.

On Friday at 8 a.m., officers from the Rainy River District OPP received a complaint of an abandoned vehicle on Strachan Road, northwest of Emo.

Police attended and searched the area, locating a deceased male within the vicinity of the vehicle.

No foul play is suspected.

Montreal ups age limit for unsupervised kids in pools

MONTREAL—The move by Montreal to increase the minimum age for youngsters to be allowed into its public swimming pools without supervision is getting the thumbs-up from the province's lifesaving society.

Several drownings earlier this year prompted the city to raise the age to eight years old from six when municipal pools opened this summer.

TORONTO—Residents of Toronto's Danforth Avenue gathered for a prayer service last night to mourn the victims of a shooting that left three people dead, including the gunman, and 13 wounded.

The mood on the normally-bustling street lined with restaurants, patios, and boutiques was solemn after it was reopened by police.

Churchill residents vow to find future

CHURCHILL, Man.—Florence Hamilton's ancestors once followed the caribou across the Arctic tundra.

That was before the federal government forcefully relocated the Sayisi Dene to barren land outside Churchill, Man. in 1956.

By 1973, 117 of the more than 250 people who were moved had died and most of those still alive moved west to Tadoule Lake, where they still live today.

'Made-in-Banff' bison calves born in backcountry

BANFF, Alta.—Three bison babies have been born in the backcountry of Banff National Park—the first calves conceived in the area in more than 140 years.

Two of the bison were born on July 15 while the third was born on Thursday.

Since being awarded the games, which will be the largest-ever with 33 sports and 339 events, Tokyo organizers have had to deal with a series of setbacks ranging from stadium and construction delays, natural disasters, and a mascot scandal.

TORONTO—With the Blue Jays lacking a starter for last night's game, manager John Gibbons hoped to find an answer in his bullpen.

The end result wasn't quite was he was looking for but Gibbons did see a glimmer of hope in three scoreless innings from Jaime Garcia to close out the game.
