Riverside Health Care has introduced a new sign-in/out procedure for all visitors and guests at Rainycrest Long Term Care Home in Fort Frances, effective this past Monday (April 9).

The goal of the sign-in/out procedure is to identify as accurate records as possible of individuals present, enabling us to provide the best assistance in an emergency situation should the need arise.

There has been two lucky winners in our area recently.

Gaby Emond won the 50/50 draw at the Emo Legion, pocketing $1,126.50.

Kelly Lengyl, meanwhile, won a trip to Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon during the Border Skating Club's annual ice show held at the Ice For Kids Arena in Fort Frances.

This trip for two is valued at $1,500.

The Water Levels Committee of the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board has directed the operators of the international dam on the Rainy River at Fort Frances-International Falls to adjust the April water level target range for Rainy Lake.

Kenora correctional officer Glen Archer put his name forward to vie for the NDP nomination in Kenora-Rainy River riding.

Archer, who filed his nomination papers in mid-February, was approved last week by the party's executive to run.

Now he's making his name known across the riding.

It's back to the drawing board.

Town council on Monday night voted 3-2 against a recommendation to keep the current pricing method for the installation of sewer and water services for properties in Fort Frances, meaning the issue once again will be referred back to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for further review.

The Sunset Country Regional Science Fair was held Saturday at Fort Frances High School.

Art Department students at Rainy River Community College in International Falls are hosting a show on Wednesday, April 25.

The show is free and open to the public.

Students working in painting and ceramics in the Art Department at RRCC will be showcasing their work.

Artwork will be on display in the RRCC Theater Lobby from April 19-May 11.

Seven district First Nations' firefighters recently graduated from the Six Nations fire training academy.

Fire departments from Rainy River First Nations, Naicatchewenin First Nation, Big Grassy First Nation, Eagle Lake First Nation, and Couchiching First Nation are working to improve their services in a bid to raise the number of volunteers and make their communities safer.

Henriette Verhoef, who passed away last Oct. 10, was honoured by receiving two awards from the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors at its annual general meeting in Niagara Falls, Ontario on March 1.

The Northwest Regional Group of Ontario Land Surveyors in Northwestern Ontario nominated her for both these awards.

On April 7, the OPP's Provincial Communication Centre received a call of a male driver passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle on Highway 11 in Dawson Township.

An officer from the Rainy River detachment went to the scene and located the male.

As a result of the investigation, the male was arrested and transported to the Fort Frances detachment to provide breath tests.

Two district First Nations soon will be able to better serve their residents in the event of a fire-related emergency.

The Hamilton Fire Department recently received approval to donate two surplus fire trucks to Couchiching and Nigigoonsiminikaaning (Red Gut).

Each of the reserves will receive one 1997 Freightliner, featuring tanks with a capacity of more than 5,000 litres.

A Fort Frances High School student attended a two-day conference March 22-23 in Toronto to mark the Minister's Student Advisory Council's 10-year anniversary.

Angie Redford was among the 60 students chosen to attend the conference, where students spoke about issues important to them while also learning about the impact MSAC has made since it was established in 2008.

A Nolalu-area man has been fined $6,500 for hunting offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

Steven Piilo pleaded guilty and was fined $3,500 for careless hunting, $1,500 for shooting from a vehicle, and $1,500 for hunting a white-tailed deer without a licence.

Hailey Clendenning was the lone Fort Frances Lakers' representative after she was selected to the second all-star team as a trainer/equipment manager.

The “Welcome Home" Fort Frances Family Centre is now open at 272 Scott St. (the old Bonnie Blue). The former Fort Frances Women's Centre moved over the weekend and re-opened its doors there as of Monday.
