New sign-in/out procedure at Rainycrest
Riverside Health Care has introduced a new sign-in/out procedure for all visitors and guests at Rainycrest Long Term Care Home in Fort Frances, effective this past Monday (April 9).
The goal of the sign-in/out procedure is to identify as accurate records as possible of individuals present, enabling us to provide the best assistance in an emergency situation should the need arise.
Lucky winners in area
There has been two lucky winners in our area recently.
Gaby Emond won the 50/50 draw at the Emo Legion, pocketing $1,126.50.
Kelly Lengyl, meanwhile, won a trip to Las Vegas on Sunday afternoon during the Border Skating Club's annual ice show held at the Ice For Kids Arena in Fort Frances.
This trip for two is valued at $1,500.

Lake level adjusted
The Water Levels Committee of the International Rainy-Lake of the Woods Watershed Board has directed the operators of the international dam on the Rainy River at Fort Frances-International Falls to adjust the April water level target range for Rainy Lake.
Kenora resident seeking NDP nod
Kenora correctional officer Glen Archer put his name forward to vie for the NDP nomination in Kenora-Rainy River riding.
Archer, who filed his nomination papers in mid-February, was approved last week by the party's executive to run.
Now he's making his name known across the riding.
Service installation billing sent back for further review
It's back to the drawing board.
Town council on Monday night voted 3-2 against a recommendation to keep the current pricing method for the installation of sewer and water services for properties in Fort Frances, meaning the issue once again will be referred back to the Operations and Facilities executive committee for further review.
Plans in works for 'Pride Week' here
Fort Frances will join other communities in the region, and across Canada, in having its own “Pride Week” this summer.
Borderland Pride has asked council to formally declare the week of July 9-15 as “Pride Week” in the Town of Fort Frances.
Comics artist to visit
Alex A., author and illustrator, discovered his love for creating cartoon characters at the age of eight—and has been at it ever since.
His first graphic novel was published in 2011, “L'Agent Jean!”
The series now includes more than 10 books, and is adored by young readers in both Quebec and Ontario.
His books have sold more than 800,000 copies in Quebec alone.

The town will be getting more money from railway right-of-way property taxation this year—and will be asking the province to get an even higher rate if possible.
'Felons' wanted for annual fundraiser

The Town of Fort Frances is expecting to have a more open line of communication with Resolute Forest Products going forward.
Mayor Roy Avis wrote a letter to new Resolute CEO and president Yves Laflamme last month, and the company has been very responsive.
Gallery welcomes newest member
Kelly Big George is the newest artist at the Fine Line Art Gallery in Fort Frances.
While she's always had an interest in drawing, the Barwick resident only really started working with paint and other media recently but quickly has grown into an accomplished artist.
Science winners
The Sunset Country Regional Science Fair was held Saturday at Fort Frances High School.
Students from the Rainy River District School Board, the Northwest Catholic District School Board, and the Keewatin Patricia District School Board took part.
Public board salutes staff, students
The Rainy River District School Board shone a light on staff and students during its regular monthly meeting last Tuesday night at the Education Centre here.
Several teachers and public school employees were recognized for 25 years of service to the board.
They included Krista McNabb Williams, Greg McKat, Kent Kowalski, Al McManaman, and Josie McLeod.
RRCC hosting art show
Art Department students at Rainy River Community College in International Falls are hosting a show on Wednesday, April 25.
The show is free and open to the public.
Students working in painting and ceramics in the Art Department at RRCC will be showcasing their work.
Artwork will be on display in the RRCC Theater Lobby from April 19-May 11.
District FN firefighters receive training
Seven district First Nations' firefighters recently graduated from the Six Nations fire training academy.
Fire departments from Rainy River First Nations, Naicatchewenin First Nation, Big Grassy First Nation, Eagle Lake First Nation, and Couchiching First Nation are working to improve their services in a bid to raise the number of volunteers and make their communities safer.
Woman given awards posthumously
Henriette Verhoef, who passed away last Oct. 10, was honoured by receiving two awards from the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors at its annual general meeting in Niagara Falls, Ontario on March 1.
The Northwest Regional Group of Ontario Land Surveyors in Northwestern Ontario nominated her for both these awards.
Driver charged
On April 7, the OPP's Provincial Communication Centre received a call of a male driver passed out behind the wheel of a vehicle on Highway 11 in Dawson Township.
An officer from the Rainy River detachment went to the scene and located the male.
As a result of the investigation, the male was arrested and transported to the Fort Frances detachment to provide breath tests.
Pair of fire trucks donated to district reserves
Two district First Nations soon will be able to better serve their residents in the event of a fire-related emergency.
The Hamilton Fire Department recently received approval to donate two surplus fire trucks to Couchiching and Nigigoonsiminikaaning (Red Gut).
Each of the reserves will receive one 1997 Freightliner, featuring tanks with a capacity of more than 5,000 litres.
Fort High student helps shape policy on education equity
A Fort Frances High School student attended a two-day conference March 22-23 in Toronto to mark the Minister's Student Advisory Council's 10-year anniversary.
Angie Redford was among the 60 students chosen to attend the conference, where students spoke about issues important to them while also learning about the impact MSAC has made since it was established in 2008.

Hockey players of all ages took home awards at the Emo-Devlin-Barwick Minor Hockey Association's annual banquet held March 24.
Reed Booth received the Tony Bliss Appreciation Award for most improved player in the Novice division while Mya LePage was the recipient in Novice girls.

Hunter nabbed by deer decoys
A Nolalu-area man has been fined $6,500 for hunting offences under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.
Steven Piilo pleaded guilty and was fined $3,500 for careless hunting, $1,500 for shooting from a vehicle, and $1,500 for hunting a white-tailed deer without a licence.
SIJHL names all-star teams
The SIJHL last week announced its first and second all-star teams for the 2017-18 season.
Hailey Clendenning was the lone Fort Frances Lakers' representative after she was selected to the second all-star team as a trainer/equipment manager.
Clendenning earned honours for her significant contributions in her first season with the Lakers.
Lakers looking for more character next season
It was a tough season for the Fort Frances Lakers—and made even harder with a tough series loss to the Dryden GM Ice Dogs in the SIJHL semi-finals.
The Lakers finished in fifth place during the regular season with a 15-32-3-6 record but put in a solid effort by taking down the fourth-place English River Miners 3-1 in the best-of-five quarter-finals.
Muskie 'birders' qualify for league finals
It was the members of the Muskie badminton teams who had local club experience that advanced to the NorWOSSA finals set for April 28 in Sioux Lookout.
Seven different Muskies finished within the top two in their divisions at a qualifier tournament last Thursday in Dryden.

Mixed title for Bonot
Trevor Bonot capped an excellent season by going undefeated en route to the title at the BrokerLink mixed provincial playdowns over the weekend in Nipigon.
The Stratton native, who joined forces with his sister, Jackie McCormick, as well as Mike McCarville and Angela Lee-Wiwcharyk for the tournament, opened play Thursday night with a 6-2 win over Nathan Lohnes (Fort William).

To Be Determined Theatre Co. delighted a packed house at the Townshend Theatre last Tuesday evening with their performance of “The Wonderful World of Miss Jiggs," bringing to life Phoebe Gilman's most famous "Jillian Jiggs” stories. The “Welcome Home" Fort Frances Family Centre is now open at 272 Scott St. (the old Bonnie Blue). The former Fort Frances Women's Centre moved over the weekend and re-opened its doors there as of Monday. The more downtown location provides ample room for drop-in centre services and programming, as well as "Melinda's Unique Boutique" and local vendors located there.
