Lakers enjoy weekend success at home
The tides have been starting to shift for the Fort Frances Lakers of late.
After snapping a six-game losing streak on Wednesday with a 6-3 win over the lowly Minnesota Iron Rangers in Hoyt Lakes, the Lakers carried that momentum into the weekend by taking five of six points at the Ice For Kids Arena.
Muskie boys end on winning note
The Muskie boys' hockey team earned a trio of wins over the weekend to finish with a league-best 14-1 record and secure home-ice advantage throughout the NorWOSSA playoffs.
Fort High cruised to a 9-1 romp over the host Red Lake Rams on Friday night, then needed a late goal from Kendyn Faragher to eke out a 5-4 victory the following afternoon.
Jr. spikers claim gold
What a way to cap an excellent season.
The Muskie junior girls' volleyball team swept their way to NorWOSSA gold Friday afternoon in Dryden with a straight-sets win over the host Eagles in the best-of-five final.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-15, and 21-19.
The Muskies had earned the bye to the final after finishing with a league-best 7-1 record during the regular season.
Family Day fun
In the spirit of Family Day, Ava Cousineau, left, and her dad, Tyler, worked together during a soapstone carving workshop yesterday morning at the Fort Frances Public Library. A morning and afternoon session—both of which were full—saw family members co-operate to carve beavers, foxes, bears, and other indigenous animals using soapstone carving kits.
Novice tourney
Josh Krasaukas of the Thunder Bay North End Flames fired a shot on the Fort Frances Armstrong Crushers' net during his team's 1-0 shutout win in Sunday's 'B' final of the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association's Novice tournament at the Ice For Kids Arena. In the 'C' final, meanwhile, Fort Frances Taggs fell 4-1 to the Kenora Strone.
