Square work still chugging along

The Rainy Lake Square continues to be a beehive of construction activity as its Oct. 5 grand-opening date draws near.

Several steel structures, including the stage superstructure, are being installed this week, Operations and Facilities manager Travis Rob told town council at its regular meeting last night.

Driver killed

Yesterday around 11:20 a.m., Dryden OPP officers responded to a single motor-vehicle mishap on Highway 502, about 60 km south of Dryden.

A highway line-painting truck travelling southbound lost control and left the roadway, rolling over.

The driver of the vehicle, Michael Gibson, a 40-year-old resident of Worthington, Ont., was pronounced dead at the scene.

More fires called 'out'

One new fire was reported in the Northwest Region between Saturday and yesterday afternoon.

Thunder Bay Fire #62 was a single tree blaze started by lightning.

It is now “out,” along with three other fires in that district.

The line of “Tour de Fort" attendees snaked around the Fort High cafeteria yesterday evening as they waited to have their passports stamped to be let into the Townshend Theatre for the first concert of the 2017-18 season. The show was "The Way We Feel,” which celebrated the music of Gordon Lightfoot with a handful of performers playing their versions of the iconic songwriter's music.

Nearly 20 local citizens of all ages proudly showed off their “Canada 150” pins and certificates after a presentation during last night's town council meeting. More than a dozen youngsters also were recognized during the season wind-up for the Kids' Garden Club at the Fort Frances Community Garden earlier yesterday.

TORONTO—At least 1,000 planned rental units in Ontario have been cancelled or converted to condominiums since the province introduced new rent control rules, a report released by a group representing rental-housing providers said as it warned of a supply crunch if the issue isn't addressed.

OTTAWA—Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the government has no intention of stifling growth for small businesses and start-ups with its upcoming changes to the tax code.

Trudeau said yesterday he has listened to the feedback and agrees with some of it, and that the government now is looking at balancing the need to make the tax code more fair without hurting investment.

Families walk 'Highway of Tears'

SMITHERS, B.C.—Gladys Radek raised a fist in the air and wept as she reached the end of her 350-km journey along British Columbia's “Highway of Tears.”

The indigenous grandmother finished her walk along the notorious stretch of Highway 16 for the seventh and final time yesterday.

It is the same highway where her beloved niece, Tamara Lynn Chipman, disappeared.

The Toronto Blue Jays had other ideas.

GLENDALE, Ariz.—Dak Prescott kneeled with his teammates and team owner before the game, flipped head over heels for a touchdown in the first half, and capped his night with a 37-yard TD pass that proved to be the winner.

The Dallas Cowboys erased last week's ugly memory last night, with their young quarterback leading the way in a 28-17 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.
