Dog walk set for Sunday

Take your pooch out for a stroll this Sunday.

The 12th-annual “Purina Walk for Dog Guides,” organized by the Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club, is all set to go.

The walk will begin at 1 p.m. at the Sorting Gap Marina, with registration starting at 11:30 a.m. (although you don't have to come out that early).

Driver facing charge

Shortly after 8 a.m. on Monday, members of the Rainy River District OPP investigated a drinking-and-driving related offence on Highway 622 in Atikokan.

As a result, a 29-year-old Atikokan woman was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol level over .08 mg.

She is scheduled to appear in court there June 7.

Dash cam nabs driver

On May 18, the OPP received video footage of a near head-on collision on Highway 17 in Coyle Township.

The driver of the pickup truck captured the video on its dash camera.

The tractor-trailer unit was westbound at the time and crossed over the centre line into the eastbound lane.

The eastbound driver swerved to avoid the collision.

Rash of new fires

Ten new fires were confirmed in the Northwest Region from May 19-25 in the districts of Dryden, Kenora, Nipigon, Sioux Lookout, Red Lake, and Thunder Bay.

Three new fires occurred May 19, two on May 20, and one on May 21.

Then after no new fires were reported on either Victoria Day or the following day, three occurred on Wednesday.

More nab OFSAA berths

John Dutton's suspicions were correct and he also got an extra pleasant surprise.

The Muskie track-and-field team coach got word earlier today that Sekina Scheibler's silver medal-winning throw of 39.64m in the senior boys' discus event at the NWOSSAA championships in Thunder Bay earlier this week was good enough to qualify for the all-Ontarios on June 1-3 in Belleville.

While the gulls have been back in Borderland for a couple of months now, American white pelicans returned in full force over the past few weeks, including this colony (the pelican-specific term for a flock during breeding season) spotted offshore at Seven Oaks on Wednesday afternoon.

Pamela Murray of Reiki White Rose Holistic Healing offered free 10-minute sessions at “Market Thursdays” here yesterday. Reiki is a Japanese form of touch therapy that is beneficial for those suffering from headaches and body pain. The weekly market, which sets up by the Fort Frances Museum courtyard, is seeing more vendors out now that the weather is getting better.

Local MP Don Rusnak announced infrastructure funding for Fort Frances, Emo, and Chapple yesterday morning at the Civic Centre. Fort Frances got a total of $957,000 to replace pipes under Second Street East from Mowat Avenue to Portage Avenue while the Township of Emo got $164,000 for upgrades to its main sewage pumping station and to replace pumps at its water treatment plant.

Members of the organizing committee were recognized for their hard work at the fifth-annual banquet of the Mill Alumni (formerly the Old-timers' Club). About 100 former mill workers attended the social hour and dinner, which took place last night at the local Legion.

RCMP still looking for boy's remains

STEINBACH, Man.—The RCMP have issued an appeal asking for the public's help in finding the remains of a 13-year-old boy who vanished in July, 1978.

David Wiebe was last seen by his mother, riding away from his home in Steinbach, Man. on his bicycle.

Michael Marchand was shopping for flowers when a representative from the Full House Lottery phoned on Wednesday to tell him he had won the early-bird draw.

Windstorm kills herons

VERNON, B.C.—More than two dozen great blue heron chicks and one adult bird are dead after their nesting site in Vernon, B.C. was heavily-damaged in a windstorm.

Vernon-based wildlife expert Pete Wise said he walked through the heron nesting colony in a protected grove of cottonwood trees yesterday and discovered several trees had been toppled by the storm earlier in the week.

Donations pour in for greenhouse

QIKIQTARJUAQ, Nunavut—A teacher in Nunavut who turned to crowdfunding for a modest greenhouse to grow vegetables with his students is revising his plans after Canadians responded with a bumper crop of donations.

Adam Malcolm originally asked for $4,500 on GoFundMe for a greenhouse about the size of a garden shed to grow fresh produce in Qikiqtarjuaq.

PITTSBURGH—The Ottawa Senators remarkable ride finally has come to an end.

Sidney Crosby set up Chris Kunitz for the double-overtime winner and his second goal of the night as the Pittsburgh Penguins ended the Sens' season 3-2 in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference final last night.

“It's one of those games where when the stakes are this high, anything can happen,” said Crosby.

But Nelson Cruz came through with a big hit—just like he did when Servais was tossed from a game back on April 16.

“Our guys joke about it,” Servais said yesterday after Seattle rallied to beat the Washington Nationals 4-2.

“They'd like to see it probably happen more.”

Python found in blanket

This time a woman found a python wrapped around her pet rat's blanket while she was doing laundry.

Juanita Tedesco called police after spotting the snake as she rinsed blankets yesterday.

She said she believes it was trying to get to her pet rat “Princess.”
