Legion ladies planning gala
The local Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary met Dec. 14, with 45 members braving the cold.
Four tickets were purchased for the Alzheimer’s dinner being held Jan. 21.
A donation was made to the Voyageur Lions’ Club’s annual “Polar Plunge” on New Year’s Day, with a group of girls to plunge in support of the Legion branch (brrrrr).
R.I.D.E. working
The Rainy River District OPP has completed more than 160 R.I.D.E. checks between Nov. 27 and Dec. 22.
Officers have laid four impaired driving charges and issued three three-day driver’s licence suspension.
Two people also were arrested on outstanding warrants while several drivers were charged under the Highway Traffic Act during that span.
Missing man found safe
The Rainy River District OPP located a male from the Fort Frances area safe and sound here late yesterday morning.
Thomas Roen Sr., 49, had been last seen Sunday in town.
The OPP wishes to thank the public for their assistance.
Outage was brief
A brief power outage yesterday was caused by a Hydro One equipment malfunction.
Hydro One took the transmission circuit supplying Fort Frances out of service at 11:06 a.m.
It was put back into service at 11:13 a.m.—a seven-minute outage.
Muskie girls beat Eagles
Annalise (CC) Hayes had one goal two weeks ago against the Dryden Eagles—and had a narrow miss on a second in the final seconds that could have tied things up.
She wasn’t leaving anything to chance on Tuesday.
Hayes netted a hat trick and added an assist as the Muskies dumped the host Eagles 5-1.
Junior spikers lone winners
It was the only win of the day for the visitors but it was an emphatic one.
The Muskie junior girls’ volleyball team swept the host Dryden Eagles 3-0 (25-22, 25-11, and 25-20) in NorWOSSA action yesterday.
Fort High (1-1) had dropped its home-opener to Dryden (3-1) eight days earlier in a hard-fought, five-set loss.
‘Booming’ sound
The Grade 5-6 class at Crossroads School in Devlin opted for the unusual musical route as it performed “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” using boomwhackers during “A Crossroads Christmas,” the school’s annual holiday concert held last night. The evening also featured piano songs, spoken-word pieces, dance numbers, and a slideshow.
Gingerbread houses

A Choral Christmas

Picking toy
Matthew Strickland, along with his friends from J.W. Walker School, picked out a toy to purchase for the “Adopt-an-Angel” campaign put on by Kenora-Rainy River Child and Family Services. The Grade 4 students from Brad Hill’s class raised money from popcorn sales to shop for two “angels,” as well as to help supplement some of the other gifts.
Snickers maker criticizes industry-funded paper on sugar
NEW YORK — Mars Inc., the maker of Skittles and M&M’s, is breaking ranks with other food companies and denouncing an industry-funded paper that says global recommendations on limiting sugar are based on weak evidence.
