Laurel Halvorsen helped her great-niece, Elena Bottomley, plant tulip bulbs on the east side of the Fort Frances Public Library on Friday morning as part of Ontario Public Library Week festivities. A small group of volunteers joined to plant the special bulbs that, come spring, will bloom red and white to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday in 2017.

District man delivers plea for long-term crisis support

Fort High students aren’t afraid of the walking dead.

In fact, they’re going to share “10 Ways to Survive the Zombie Apocalypse” as they present Don Zolidis’ comedy at the Townshend Theatre tomorrow through Saturday.

Teacher Tracy Rob, who is assisting with the production, noted the annual fall play is being held almost a month earlier than usual.

Lovers of classic automobiles will be thrilled to know Fort Frances is one of the stops on the Canadian Coasters 50th Anniversary Cross-Canada Tour next summer.

More input on bylaw sought

The local business community would like more input on any future amendments to the town’s business licensing bylaw.

Town council voted 5-1 against a recommendation to approve an amended draft of the bylaw during its regular meeting Monday night, citing it needed more changes and clarification.

A culvert replacement continues at Everett Creek on Highway 11/71 in Emo. Work includes a culvert replacement, embankment rehabilitation, and paving. The contract was awarded to LH North Ltd. and work started in July. The road is expected to fully open to traffic by the end of November, with remaining paving work to be completed next season.

Schools here faring well on inclusive education

When it comes to inclusive education in the province, school boards here in Rainy River District are faring better than most.

At least that was the opinion of experts during a workshop here last week on Effective Education Advocacy, hosted by Community Living Ontario and Community Living Fort Frances and District.
