Joan Foley, left, drew the winning ticket for October’s “Trip of the Month” draw yesterday morning at International Travel Services here as Fort Frances Kiwanian Robin Wright looked on. Willie and Jenn Johnson will be heading to sunny San Diego, a trip valued at $3,600. Next month’s trip is to Honolulu ($4,000).

RRHS program saluted

Rainy River High School will be receiving the Rainy River District School Board’s monthly Recognition of Excellence for indigenous education at its meeting there tonight.

RRHS principal Jim Chorney said the school incorporates indigenous culture in daily school routines and lessons.

New digs

Mike Canfield of BDO Fort Frances settled into his new office yesterday at BDO’s new location at 607 Portage Ave. (the old high school next to H2O Power). BDO moved from its former 375 Scott St. location over the weekend, with a grand opening set for Friday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., including a charity barbecue and office tours.

One new fire probed

One new fire in the Northwest Region was investigated by fire personnel between Sept. 29 and Oct. 3.

Nipigon Fire #40 was located on an island about six km southwest of Longlac.

The 0.1-hectare blaze was reported by a person out kayaking and fire personnel responded.

It is now “out.”

Meanwhile, two fires remain active in the region.

Jeremy Bertrand, with the Ontario Ministry of Finance, offered a presentation entitled “Get Your Money!” to those attending a seniors’ fair at the Sister Kennedy Centre here this morning. Hosted by the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario, the four-hour event included a variety of informational booths and several speakers.
