Big band experience to take Backus Stage

The Backus Community Center in International Falls is excited to host the “Shaun Johnson Big Band Experience” this Saturday (Oct. 1).

This will mark the second performance in the 2016-17 Backus Performing Arts Series and is sure to be an unbelievable night.

Brayden Neurinski was busy helping with the harvest during a kids’ garden club session yesterday at the Fort Frances Community Garden. With a multitude of flourishing gardens, organizers are calling it another successful season. The kids’ club, along with the adult gardeners, will host an official season wrap-up on Oct. 12.

Islam Open House

Tariq Azeem, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community, outlined the basic teachings of the Qur’an yesterday evening during an “Islam Open House” at the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre. About two dozen people attended the talk, during which Azzem, who came here from Lloydminster, Alta., dispelled some of the popular misconceptions about the religion.

Joyce Scott got her early-morning coffee, muffin, and goodie bag from Dale Gill during the Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club’s annual “Drive-Thru Breakfast” fundraiser this morning at Tim Hortons here. The club gave out about 170 goodie bags—full of items donated by local businesses—from 6-9 a.m.

'Eye Run' shaping up

Be sure to mark Oct. 15 on your calendar!

The Fort Frances Voyageur Lions Club’s first-ever 5K “Eye Run” is set to take place that day to raise money for community members to travel to the CNIB’s Lake Joseph Centre next summer.

Run organizer Wayne Lundstrom, who is visually-impaired himself, said plans really are coming together for the event.

Nexus helping breast cancer fight

Nexus Community Credit Union Ltd. was approached by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to raise money for it.

Our branch was happy to participate in this fundraiser as a number of women in our community recently have been diagnosed with this disease.

As well, cancer in some form or another has touched the lives of someone we know.

Busy weekend for fishing tournaments

This past weekend was a busy one across Sunset Country for anglers competing in fishing tournaments as four were taking place.

LaBelle’s Birch Point Camp on Rainy Lake hosted a one-day bass tournament on Saturday, and there was a two-day musky tournament in Nestor Falls, a two-day bass tournament at Shoal Lake, and the two-day Rainy River Walleye Tournament in Rainy River.

Big ‘D’ was a big downer for the Muskie court teams.

Fort High left Dryden with just one win in four matches against the host Eagles in its second NorWOSSA outing of the season Tuesday.

That sole triumph belonged to the junior girls’ basketball squad, which went from a tight first quarter to a walkaway 49-36 victory.

Grace Petsnick led the Muskies (2-0) with 12 points.

Most nights last season, the post-game scene in the Fort Frances Lakers’ home dressing room was one of loud music and merriment.

So far this year, the pulsing beats and hearty laughter have been non-existent.
