The monument includes an inspirational message on the front, which first came to Joe in a dream back in 2012.

Teen named to advisory council

Mira Donaldson has served as a Legislative Page, was named a 2014 Ontario Junior Citizen of the Year, and last month earned top honours in drama at the provincial competition of the Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals.

But she’s not stopping there with her achievements.

The ninth-grader also recently was selected to be part of the Minister’s Student Advisory Council.

‘Play Zone’ event deemed success

“Play Zone 2016,” a new event held last Wednesday evening to showcase the various clubs and sports available to local youth, was deemed a success by both organizers and participants.

“We received positive responses from clubs, parents, and kids,” said co-organizer Elaine Fischer.

Plenty of ideas for Sunny Cove

A campground/RV park, zip lines, developing the second beach, and other improvements were among the ideas offered during a brainstorming session on the long-term use and potential for Kiwanis Sunny Cove Camp held there last Wednesday evening.

The town’s Kiwanis Sunny Cove Advisory Committee invited the public to provide their input on what they’d like to see the camp develop into.

Emo to hold ‘street party’ to celebrate Canada Day

Emo is getting back into the spirit of Canada Day by holding a free “street party” to help celebrate the country’s 149th birthday.

“We wanted to test the waters out this year since next year is Canada’s 150th,” explained Allison Cox, rec director/community development co-ordinator for the Township of Emo.

Fairy tale staged

“Principal Charming” (Jayden Asselin) caught the fancy of a grateful “Snow White” (Joanna Empey) during the closing scene of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” held Monday night at Crossroads School in Devlin. The play was performed for the entire school earlier in the day, then for visiting students from Donald Young School and Sturgeon Creek School yesterday.

Residential school survivors honoured

A dream Joe Medicine had in 2012 finally has come to fruition.

A monument created in recognition of survivors of residential schools was unveiled Saturday morning at Rainy River First Nations after several years of hard work and dedication.

Inscribed on the front of the monument is a passage Medicine first heard in a dream—and served as a inspiration to spearhead the project.

Dunn leaves EWC on high note

For 15 years, the organizing committee has been the heartbeat behind the Emo Walleye Classic and Lincoln Dunn was its pulse.

The torch will be passed come next spring, though, as Dunn recently announced his resignation as chair of the tournament following his decade-and-a-half of involvement.

Winding down

The season may be winding down but the intensity was still up for those taking part in Emo Youth Soccer last Thursday evening at the Emo Sports Field. The organization will hold its final games of 2016 tomorrow night before shutting down until next spring.

SIJHL opts to change overtime format

Extra sessions should be extra fun for SIJHL fans this season.

The league voted to adopt the 3-on-3 overtime format beginning this fall during its annual meeting in Dryden over the weekend.

The concept has earned widespread praise after the NHL instituted it this past season in an effort to reduce the number of games being decided in shootouts.

Dragon boat festival set to go

The “dragons” are ready to set fire to the waters of the upper Rainy River.

Both professionals and amateurs will gather at the Sorting Gap Marina this Saturday (June 25) for the fifth-annual Boundary Waters Dragon Boat Festival.

Eight teams will square off to see whose collection of paddlers can be first to the finish line.

The Muskie boys’ hockey team will have to make do defending its OFSAA ‘AA’ boys’ championship on home ice next spring without two—and possibly three—of its brightest young prospects from this past season.

Forwards Cooper Witherspoon, Nick Hahkala, and Ethan Jourdain all successfully tried out for the Thunder Bay Minor Midget ‘AAA’ Kings at the end of last month.
