Construction season

Makkinga Contracting & Equipment Rentals of Thunder Bay has removed the asphalt, curbs, and gutters at the south end of Colonization Road East between Scott Street to Second Street East to get ready to dig down and replace the sewer and water infrastructure there.
Fire ban now lifted
Break out the marshmallows.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has lifted the Restricted Fire Zone that had been in place across Northwestern Ontario since May 7.
Outdoor fires are now allowed but people still are urged to use caution.
As well, daytime burning of brush or grass is prohibited.
Muskies ranked second, fourth
All the pieces are in place. Now the Muskie girls’ and boys’ soccer teams just have to solve the puzzle.
The seedings and pools have been announced for the OFSAA ‘AA’ girls’ championship in North Bay and the ‘AA’ boys’ playoff in Kingsville, which both run June 2-4.
Lined up

Shelby Tymkin of the Fort Frances Mud Dogs was looking for a good connection on this swing in front of Fort Frances Her-icanes’ catcher Charity McMahon during the fourth inning of their Rainy River District Women’s Fastball League game yesterday evening at VanJura. The Mud Dogs eked out a 12-11 win to remain atop the standings at 6-0 while the Her-icanes slipped to second place at 4-1.
Teeing off

Peyton Avis prepared to tee off on the ninth hole at Kitchen Creek yesterday evening. About 40 children and their families enjoyed the warm weather during the first “Quality Time” session of the season. Golfers were able to play at a reduced rate, and also received a hotdog and beverage afterwards.
Dirt flying

Stratton’s John Gavel (170) literally was playing dirty in this fight for position against Jessy Lloyd of Sioux Lookout (737) on the opening turn of the first MX3 Open heat of the day at the Emo Motocross track Saturday as the Northern Ontario Superior Dirt Riders kicked off its season. Gavel placed fourth in the division in what was the first of two race days planned for Emo this year.
Fire ban being assessed
With the fire hazard currently “low” across the region, the Restricted Fire Zone was to be assessed later today for the potential to lift it.
No new fires were reported over the weekend.
As well, widespread rain fell across the region Saturday and Sunday, which kept all of the active fires in check.
Métis open house

Sunset Country Métis president Clint Calder, left, chatted with Sarah-Lynn Klassen during the “Ring in Spring” open house yesterday afternoon at the Métis Hall here. Those on hand enjoyed free tea and bannock, and also got to meet-and-greet the Sunset Country Métis council.
Lip-syncing fun

Cynthia Donald, left, and Johnathan Price, right, performed the B-52’s “Love Shack” during the lip-syncing portion of the “Sync or Swim” social hosted by the Fun in the Sun committee Saturday night at the Memorial Sports Centre auditorium. The event, which also featured games like mini putt and limbo, as well as a penny table, was held to raise money to fund Canada Day activities here.

Book sale

Dozens of people rushed to the Fort Frances Public Library Technology Centre on Saturday morning to look for some used books to purchase at the annual book sale hosted by the “Friends of the Library.” About 3,000 books were donated, with all funds raised from the sale going towards library programming.
