The Muskie boys’ hockey team celebrated its first gold medal at the OFSAA ‘A/AA’ championship in 15 years after beating the Silverthorn Collegiate Institute Spartans (Etobicoke) 4-2 in the final yesterday afternoon in Ottawa. The team is slated to arrive home tomorrow sometime between 5:30 and 6 p.m. at the Memorial Sports Centre.

Petition to gauge ‘fort’ support

A new online petition has been launched to gauge support for putting the “fort” back in Fort Frances.

Nathalie Donaldson, who came up with the idea for a fort theme for the future Rainy Lake Market Square, said she started the petition yesterday to get a better idea as to whether or not the public is in favour of the concept.

Cash winners

District

John Makkinga (Thunder Bay) and Joe and Sheila Shyiak (Fort Frances) won the $100 up for grabs for Feb. 29 and March 1, respectively in the Rainy River District Mutual Aid Association’s weekly cash calendar draw.

Bantam Warriors finish fifth

Kristofer Cochrane’s timing was impeccable.

Cochrane scored what reportedly were his first two goals of the season in his team’s last tournament game to lead the Fort Frances Wu Warriors to a 4-1 victory over the Fort Frances Holmlund Leafs in the fifth-place final of the Fort Frances Minor Hockey Association’s six-team Bantam ‘A’ boys’ tournament Sunday at the Ice For Kids Arena.

Erin Campbell of Science North tested out structures made by Grade 8 students at J.W. Walker School this morning to see if they could withstand an earthquake. Campbell spent the day there today and also was at Robert Moore School yesterday teaching youngsters about science.

Johnston in early lead

Dylan Johnston had his own idea for an opening ceremony—beat the defending champs.

That’s exactly what the Thunder Bay skip and his team of third Tirzah Keffer (Fort Frances), Mike Badiuk (Devlin) at second, and Sheree Hinz (Thunder Bay) at lead ended up doing last night in the first draw of mixed provincial championship at the Fort Frances Curling Club.

Wrestler off to regionals

Noah Armstrong is ready for his next challenge.

The Fort Frances resident, who represents Mighty Mustangs Wrestling in International Falls, finished first in the 4th grade, 85- to 90-pound division at the NYWA Districts amateur wrestling meet in Deer River, Mn. over the weekend.

With the victory, Armstrong now advances to the regional meet March 19 in Bemidji.

First-round matches set

The playoffs now beckon with the conclusion of the Fort Frances Women’s Volleyball League’s regular season last night.

All the first-round ‘A’-side matchups are set for the double elimination post-season, which gets underway March 24 at Fort High and St. Michael’s School.

OTTAWA—The Muskies are provincial champs once again!

The boys’ hockey team captured the gold medal after doubling the Silverthorn Collegiate Institute Spartans (Etobicoke) 4-2 in the final of the OFSAA ‘A/AA’ championship in Ottawa.

“I can’t even describe what it feels like,” Muskie coach Jamie Davis grinned while his players celebrated on the ice.

Ford makes police car doors that stop armour-piercing bullets

DETROIT — It’s a first for police cars: Doors that can protect against armour-piercing bullets.

Ford will soon be offering the doors on its Police Interceptor sedans and SUVs. They’ll be the first in the U.S. to meet the Justice Department’s highest standard for body armour, the equivalent of a bulky SWAT team vest.
