‘Go Local’ celebrating third year
“Go Local” is celebrating its third birthday in March!
Over the past three years, the “Go Local” program has rewarded almost 1.5 million points to more than 3,000 members for shopping locally.
To celebrate, “Go Local” and its 32 participating businesses are inviting residents to take advantage of special promotions and giveaways throughout the month.
Lakers fall to Stars
The Fort Frances Lakers went up in the rankings, then went down in flames.
Jesse Talakoski had a hat trick, and Riley Corbin turned aside 47 shots, as the host Thunder Bay North Stars beat the Lakers 6-4 last night in the first of a two-game set.
It was the Lakers’ first loss in regulation time in 15 games.
‘Pirate’ show

A large crowd enjoyed the show “Everybody Loves Pirates,” performed by Frogtown Mountain Puppeters of Bar Harbor, Maine, yesterday evening at the Townshend Theatre. Part of the “Kids & Company” entertainment series, the final show of the season is called “The Queen of Colours,” which will be staged April 25.
Trip winner

Angel Andrushuk of Curves drew the “Trip of the Month” draw winner for March this morning at International Travel Services as Kiwanian Robin Wright looked on. Kim Johnston is heading on a Mexican cruise—a trip valued at $3,600. Next month’s trip is to Curacao ($3,900).
Ready to cook

The Cat, played by Maya Davis, got ready to cook up something special in the kitchen during a scene from Robert Moore School’s production of “Honk!” there this morning. The musical—an adaptation of the Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Ugly Duckling”—was performed for staff and students, with the production taking to the stage again tonight and tomorrow at 6 p.m.
Chief accused of carrying pot in sacred pouch
WINNIPEG—The chief of the Mathias Colomb First Nation says he’s filing a complaint after being accused by a security screener at the Winnipeg airport of having marijuana in a sacred medicine pouch.
Chief Arlen Dumas noted he flies a lot and usually doesn’t have any problem, adding he understands how difficult the job can be.
Tough-guy character actor dies
LOS ANGELES—George Kennedy, the hulking, tough-guy character actor who won an Academy Award for his portrayal of a savage chain-gang convict in the 1960s classic “Cool Hand Luke,” has died.
His grandson, Cory Schenkel, said Kennedy died Sunday morning of old age in Boise, Idaho. He was 91.
He had undergone emergency triple bypass surgery in 2002.

Police Scotland said the force began receiving calls around 6:55 p.m. yesterday, with people reporting a loud bang, a sudden blue, green, or white light, or a fireball in the sky.
Inquest ‘condones’ shooting: chief
GOD’S LAKE NARROWS, Man.—The leader of a remote northern Manitoba First Nation says an inquest into the fatal RCMP shooting of a man on his reserve essentially condones killing indigenous people.
Chief Gilbert Andrews of God’s Lake First Nation noted the inquest judge didn’t condemn the 2011 shooting of Paul Duck or make any recommendations to prevent a similar tragedy.
