Local lawyer agrees to licence revocation

According to an article released by the CBC, a former Fort Frances lawyer has agreed to have his license revoked, due to the misappropriation of client funds.

OPP launches Festive R.I.D.E. Campaign this week

Between robust mandatory alcohol screening laws, vigilant citizens and dedicated officers, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reminds drivers they'll have plenty to worry about if they choose to get behind the wheel after consuming alcohol or drugs over the holidays.

The OPP's Festive R.I.D.E. campaign kicks off this week and runs until January 3, 2021.

Bargain Shop toy drive in the home stretch

The Bargain Shop is halfway through its annual toy drive to support charities in the community, and is excited by the community’s show of support so far.

The toy drive began on Nov. 14. The shop will be collecting monetary donations, as well as toy donations until Dec. 5. So far, they have raised $3,792 and hope to reach their goal of $7,000 by Dec. 5.

The Fort Frances Chamber of Commerce is looking to tag local businesses into a fun and festive way to help the public shop local during this holiday season.

The Bargain Shop Fort Frances store manager Dawn Gray, left, and keyholder Cassidy Jolicoeur show off some of the toys collected as part of their annual toy drive to support the Salvation Army in town. The drive runs until December 5 and is collecting monetary donations as well, and Gray said that they're more than halfway to their $7,000 goal.

Ontario has decided to stop changing the clocks twice a year - if Quebec and New York State follow suit.

A bill introduced by Tory politician Jeremy Roberts passed in the legislature Wednesday.

The attorney general will have discretion to enact the legislation if the other two governments make a similar move.

A new report finds that almost half of Ontario's hospitals are in a poor state of repair.

That's far worse than the situation involving roads, bridges and other infrastructure.

The Financial Accountability Office estimates the province owns infrastructure worth about a quarter of a trillion dollars.

Overall, it says about one third is in poor repair.

Ontario records 1,478 new COVID-19 cases before releasing updated projections

TORONTO - Ontario is reporting 1,478 new cases of COVID-19 today, and 21 more deaths related to the virus.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 572 of those cases are in Peel Region, and 356 are in Toronto.

Both regions are currently in the “lockdown” stage of the province's pandemic plan.

TORONTO - Ontario residents should celebrate the upcoming winter holidays only with the people they live with, regardless of the COVID-19 situation in their region, the provincial government said Wednesday.

The province issued its initial guidance for the holiday period, saying it knows Ontarians are already making plans.
