Harvest Market deemed a success

This year’s “Harvest Market” held at Emo Feeds on Saturday, October 10, was deemed a success by organizers. Despite COVID-19 hovering not too far away the Emo Feed Store was a busy place this past weekend. Many people following the COVID-19 protocol to do some shopping in this extremely unique store.

A new priest has brought his passion for service to Fort Frances.

Father Gino Mathias is the newest priest at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church. Originally from South India — “the southernmost tip” — Father Mathias has been serving in his role in various places around the world for the past two decades, including other parts of Ontario.

The young children were interested in the many pumpkins which were for sale. Many families left with one or two pumpkins which would no doubt be carved into jack-o-lanterns before the end of the month.

On Thursday, about 15 protesters gathered in front of 479 Government Rd. in Dryden, Ontario, to ask the provincial government for increased staffing and funding for long-term care homes.

Local bikers fare well in Motocross event

Several local dirt mixers took part in a Superior Dirt Riders Motocross meet in Atikokan on September 26. The club runs several dirt bike and ATV practices and races throughout the summer and fall, in Emo, Atikokan and Kakabeka Falls.

New COVID-19 cases in Dryden/Red Lake over Thanksgiving

The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) announced one new positive COVID-19 case in the Dryden/Red Lake region.

Currently there are five active cases, two in the Dryden/Red Lake area, one in Kenora and two in Sioux Lookout.

Horwath unveils plans to improve long-term care homes

On Tuesday, Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath held a virtual media conference via Zoom and promised to improve long-term care homes in northwestern Ontario.

With the provincial elections coming up, one of Horwath's promises to the province's 630 long-term care homes is expanding the public system and ending for-profit long-term care in Ontario.

Trail fees waived for fall recreation

Autumn is a perfect time to use the ski trails, so to encourage people to get out in the fresh air and stay active, the Rainy Lake Nordic Ski Club has waived trail fees for hiking, until ski and snowshoe season begins.

The chalet will remain closed, but seating and a fire pit are available for responsible use, and an outhouse is available near the chalet.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Fort Frances, distributed barbecue meals to celebrate their 40th anniversary and mark Mental Illness Awareness Week. The CMHA operates in 300 communities across Canada. Their mission is to champion mental health, facilitate access to mental health resources and support the recovery of those battling mental illness.

Ontario reports 721 new cases, most under age 60

TORONTO - Ontario is reporting 721 new COVID-19 cases today and no new deaths related to the novel coronavirus.

The province says another 783 cases are now considered resolved.

The latest figures bring the provincial total to 61,413 cases, which includes 3,017 deaths and 52,512 resolved cases.

The bulk of the new cases are among those under the age of 60.
