Canada celebrates Orange Shirt Day

Orange Shirt Day celebrations took place yesterday. Sept. 30 is a day to both honour Indigenous children who were sent away to residential schools and learn more about the history of those schools.

Yesterday was Orange Shirt Day, a day on Sept. 30 to recognize and honour all Metis, Inuit and First Nation children who were taken away from their parents to go to residential schools.

Family Centre weathers COVID for Thanksgiving

urrently in the preparatory stages of throwing a Thanksgiving dinner for those who make use of their services, which volunteer Monica Sus said will be open to anyone in need.

“Anybody who wants to come in, just come in off the street, it's for absolutely anybody,” Sus explained.

Three new positive cases of COVID-19 in region

Three new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Northwestern Health Unit region in the past day.

The NWHU has received a report of one new positive COVID-19 test result in the Rainy River region, and two positive cases in the Sioux Lookout region.

Sun sets on Rainy Lake Market

The Rainy Lake Market season has come to an end with the last day taking place on Thursday Sept. 24.

Christine McGoldrick, economic development officer intern at the Rainy River Future Development Corporation (RRFDC), said the market started off with three or four vendors before having 16 to 20 vendors when traffic picked up.

Trip of the Month

Joey Hunter, manager at McTaggarts, pulled the winning ticket for the Fort Frances “Trip of the Month” draw for October today morning. Patricia Hartlin is the winner of the October draw, a trip to Portugal, valued at $3,800.00. Next month’s draw will be for a trip to Puerto Vallarta, valued at $4,200.00.

The Rainy Lake Market in Rainy Lake Square was a popular spot for both vendors and patrons this summer. The venue has wound down for the year, but will be back next spring.

After several years of negotiating space each winter, RRDSSAB has purchased the Apostolic Way Church, to provide a permanent home for the Out of the Cold shelter. Renovations are currently underway, including roof repairs.

Ontario will abide by judge's ruling against carbon tax stickers, minister says

TORONTO - The Ontario government says it will not appeal a court ruling against its anti-carbon tax stickers.

Energy Minister Greg Rickford's office says the province will abide by the decision.

Last month, a Superior Court judge struck down the law that forced gas stations to display the stickers.

TORONTO - Ontario is reporting 538 new cases of COVID-19 today and three new deaths from the illness.

Health Minister Christine Elliott says 229 cases are being reported in Toronto, 101 cases in Peel Region, 66 in Ottawa, and 43 in York Region.

TORONTO - Citing COVID-19's effect on its bottom line, Rugby Canada is cutting staff from chief commercial and marketing officer Mark Lemmon to Hall of Famer Al Charron, whose name graces its national training centre.

CEO Allen Vansen says 15 of the organization's 46 staff have been affected - with five people terminated, three laid off and seven facing reduced hours.
